When it's too late to take care of your skin
When is it too late to take care of our skin? I have been approached with this question many times in my career, mainly by women over the age of 40. I am here to say it’s NEVER too late. That’s right, you read it correctly, it doesn’t matter what age you are. Taking care of your skin is sooo much more than simply applying products. Although nowadays products are no longer about just lathering Nivea, Vaseline, or baby oil, today many of them, including ours, are backed by scientific research and have been proven to help improve and correct skin concerns even after the age of 40, 50, 60+. But, believe it or not, besides that, it’s not the main reason for this write-up.
Thanks to our Mom, I have been in the skincare industry all my life. I took it for granted for many years and after working in a high-end cosmetic boutique with hundreds of different brands catering to that high-end clientele, it even felt superficial. It took me to be a stay at home mom with a colicky baby to realize topical skin care goes beyond just taking care of your skin.
Honestly at first, when it came to our firstborn, I didn’t know what hit me. I was lucky to get out of my PJ's or go out for some fresh air. I stayed close to home in case she had another crying episode that lasted hours. Knowing that I can quickly retire to my comfort zone and be ready to go through round # whichever and properly care for our little one by having everything at my disposal kept my anxiety and stress at bay.
Taking care of myself during those times were non-existent. I attended to my skin here and there only because of my background and knew that consistency was one of the keys in aging gracefully. Our mom is a prime example. But, being mindful in the application of our skincare products little did I know that was another added benefit.
I slowly realized when I did take the time to apply my skincare products my skin instantly felt good, refreshed, and in return, there was this slight feel-good feeling. That feeling is priceless. That small self-care act I was doing, I slowly realized how it can slightly improve my mood, or lead me little by little to other self-care acts. Although small, it was an outlet that gave me a reboot to better my self or simply have a good start to my day.
So, whether you are 40, 50, 60+, a man or woman it's never too late to take care of your skin because it’s never too late to take care of yourself. I ask you next time you do apply your skincare routine, be aware of each step, connect on how it makes you feel internally. I bet you-you feel better. ;)
